A strange blood test!

So here we are at the Surgery, fasted and all ready for the blood test. I'm the first patient of the day and guess what....yes, it was a 30 minute wait for the test. So there I am having a fasting test, that would last for over two hours more and they've delayed it by another 30 minutes!!!!

Good job I can go all day without food isn't it.

So I eventually had the first blood test, then had to drink two cups of Lucozade there and then and then another one over the next five minutes. I went back out to the waiting room to make myself comfortable, after all I'd be there for the next two hours or more now.

I'd taken a puzzle book and my ipod to keep me amused. After doing a few puzzles, a friend of mine came in I'd not seen for a while. She was worried about diabetes and was asking the GP. She had a finger test and he said she was fine so she was happy which is good news.

At this stage all I knew was it was a Blood Glucose test, so I hadn't researched it, just assumed it was another blood test as normal.

phoned gp to find out results

The receptionist said that it stated "See Doctor" so I made an appointment to see the GP again. Sometimes I get fed up with Doctors!

11th july 2011
back to the gp to find out the results...

I knew it was nothing cancer related so wasn't too worried. It can't be anything too bad as it didn't say urgent, go now or anything like that.

I sat down and she looked at me and said "You my dear, are diabetc" and I was a bit stunned to say the least. OK I'm overweight - and have been all my life more or less - but I eat everything low fat and low sugar. John gets fed up with me doing it to be honest, but I like to try my best.

She phoned the local Diabetes Centre and said I'd have to go tomorrow - telling the person the other end of the phone "I've got a challenge for you here with this one". Good job I get on OK with this GP isn't it!

I said we had something planned for tomorrow (another medical appointment) but she said to cancel it and go straight away. I was getting a bit concerned at this to be honest, maybe thinking I'd have to have insulin and it was ridiculously high numbers or something.

Oh well nothing else for it but to go tomorrow and see what they say.

I didn't sleep well that night I can tell you.

stephanie marks diabetes centre

Here I am at the Diabetes Centre, it's a secure place, you have to buzz to be let in. Of course all I could say was "I had an appointment with Dr G yesterday and she sent me here" no appointment time or name just that.

"Oh yes" said the lady "I remember that, you were one of two from yesterday".

I was called in fairly quickly and the normal nurse wasn't there (on holiday) so I was seeing the Specialist Nurse. She said she wouldn't normally see me as it looks like I'm a good girl!

So after being worried sick thinking it was insulin etc, it turns out it's not that bad. She did a blood test there and then, it was 5.2 which isn't that bad. She asked if I wanted to see the Dietician, then added "I suppose you've seen quite a few already" and she wasn't wrong there. So I declined. I know what I'm supposed to eat, and with the odd exception I normally do well. Eating the right things, lots of fruit and veg and not too many sweet things. I don't eat biscuits and only have the occasional cake. John is still confused as to why I am diabetic when I don't have anything sweet usually.

Mum has been diabetic for over 10 years, so I've known for quite a while what she does and what the numbers are supposed to be. She said I seem very sensible and understand what I've been told.

I was given a little Blood Testing machine (I could chose my colour too, how trendy is that!!!).

Now I'd had a chat and asked a few questions I'm not worried about it anymore. It's fairly straight forward, and unless I'm really bad I won't be seeing her again (although she was really nice and put me at my ease). She normally see's the bad girls!

I've got to see the GP and get on the Diabetic Register and see the Diabetic Nurse at the GP Surgery. At least I get a free eye test now! You have to look at the pros as well as the cons with these things LOL!

Cancer, kidney failure and now Diabetes. That's on top of the Lymphoedema, the Lichen Planus and the other things I've got since the cancer treatment. I wonder how many diseases one person can get???

Keep smiling and carry on......that's me...!!! :-)

gp surgery again

Now I know in my diary I'm here, but for the life of me I can't remember why! Sorry! I think it might be something to do with the Diabetes.

Oh yes, I remember now it is. Memory not too good latey as you can tell!

I've now been put on medication for the Diabetes. This doesn't make sense sometimes though. A friend is an 8 and is borderline Diabetic. I am 5.2 and am on medication!

Also when I'm naughty (not often but sometimes - well a girl has to!) then my numbers go down, but when I'm good, they go up! Explain that one then. I sure can't!

birthday time

Happy Birthday Debbie!!! Hope the card arrived OK and you had a great time.

This lovely lady started up her own blog after being inspired to do so by the Furry Monkey. How amazing is that!

Keep fighting Debbie, and keep smiling and enjoying life too!

dentist.....

OK this used to not be my favourite place to go, but since I've had a root canal (the first one not the second/third time one!) I've become OK with them and don't mind going now.

I saw a programme on TV about being charged £45+ for a hygienist when if you are an NHS patient, it should be included in your check up!!! I asked about this and was told yes, it can be done, but it's only a scale and polish. So I thought I'd cancel the hygienist appointment and see what it was like. If it's OK then why pay £45+ if you don't have to!
