01 DECEMBER 2002

Pinch punch first of the month...... Yes December is here already! Time has flown really quickly. I am half way through my radiotherapy treatment, no needles so far which is a BIG BONUS in my book I can tell you.

I've even managed to get a bit of christmas shopping done which is amazing. However I can't stand the pace any longer and get tired really quickly so have to have short outings. No mammoth christmas shopping sessions for me this year!

Still at least it's getting done! I wish I could go shopping in London - but it's only trips to the hospital for me I'm afraid!

02 DECEMBER 2002

Another week starts. It's easier than chemo but the travelling up there each day is very wearing. We all get tired.

Feeling a bit fed up at the moment. It's one of those "what is the point of all this?" type of days. I really don't know the answer to that question. It's quite normal apparently as spooky though it is, one of the drivers was talking about it today. He said you do get these days, where you try to be positive but it just doesn't work. No matter how hard you try.

I get them sometimes. You do wonder if everyone else is having the same thoughts, it feels like you're in a crowded room, but all alone. So alone.....

I am getting a lot of pain from my leg. It is quite red and very swollen. It is really awkward trying to get it in to the boot now for the radiotherapy machine. It feels so tight like it will burst. So tender, it hurts when the cats brush against it or my skirt.

I hope it doesn't get any worse. I've seen a lady in the Waiting Room whose leg looks like it has been burnt (which in effect it has I suppose!). Keep your fingers crossed for me. I don't need this!!!

05 DECEMBER 2002

Just got booked in and sat down and my name was called. I was told they'd called me early as they wanted to be go back to Radiotherapy Planning and have my leg remeasured as it was very swollen yesterday. It's been increasing all week.

I went back to the waiting room and a radiographer came and told me it would about an hour for a scan. I went to find Bernard (the driver that day) to let him know I was going to be later than expected. I went up and down the hospital and couldn't find him anywhere, not the Snax Bar, in his car, their office, nowhere. So in the end I asked the Receptionist if they could phone him. This they did. He said it was OK and that he would wait.

So I went back to the waiting room and waited (appropriate huh!). After about 1/2 hour another Jesal (one of the radiographers) came in and said "oops bad news Karen sorry!". I wouldn't be having my scan that day as they were chockerblock upstairs. I would have to come back tomorrow. Also, as my leg couldn't be measured NO TREATMENT either. A day added on I suppose. Never mind.

06 DECEMBER 2002

Just got booked in and sat down and my name was called. I was told they'd called me early as they wanted to be go back to Radiotherapy Planning and have my leg remeasured as it was very swollen yesterday. It's been increasing all week.

Another Doctor was called in and he said it could be one of three things.

pic mini banana A possible Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
pic mini banana An infection
pic mini banana Side effects from radiotherapy

So straight away he went and called another department and we had to go immediately there, to rule out the DVT. This was a worrying thing, I've heard of this...... lots of thoughts through my head. Anyway we went walking through a somewhat desserted hospital at this time (it was late about 5.00pm by now!). Some stairs as the lifts were either out of action or being used for Ward moves. Painful!!!

We arrived at the Vascular something something (sorry I can't remember!). I then stood on a box with a long handle and had loads of cold jelly put on me. The machine looked like a time machine. I was looking at the screen but didn't know what I was looking at. My leg was squeezed and prodded and it was REALLY painful at times. I know it has to be done but it still HURTS!

I then had to turn around and the same was done to the back of the leg. The Dr Jackson had to squeeze round my ankle whilst the Vascular guy checked the flow of blood. He said it was OK in the ankles and around the top, but in the middle where it was so swollen he couldn't see much of the veins, but as the top and bottom was OK, he was sure there was nothing there. That was a RELIEF I can tell you!

So off we went back to the Planning. Now that DVT was out of the picture, the next thing was an infection. So I was prescribed two lots of antibiotics and told to elevate it very high (he did what looked like a ballet movement to show me how high!) in bed and also when I sit down for things like reading and watching TV. There would be NO TREATMENT that day either. Two days to add on now...... :-(((((

We then went to get the drugs (more drugs, I'm rattling now!!). Saw Graham (he had replaced Alan as he had other patients waiting so they swapped). I've found out that one of the ladies (so-called) I travelled with before who seemed quite nice, has been saying horrible things about me. Lovely huh!! Wait till I see her again. It's bad enough having this treatment, no smoking and look what happens to me. She smokes and is caked in make-up (you know the sort of old baggage!!!)....and she has the nerve to say things about me!!! Anyway, she's not worth thinking about. I've met her type before, nice to your face and stab you in the back. Sometimes I can ignore it, sometimes I can't and it's one of those can't times!!

Just got my drugs and saw Dr Cassoni. She was on her way out I think, and stopped to see me and Dr Jackson. She looked at my leg and they then discussed what to do next, along with a Nurse who had come down to see me as well. They decided to leave it until Tuesday and hope the antibiotics had worked by then.

She said she will be in meetings, but to call her when I was there. She then said maybe we should go as I shouldn't stand on it too long! So NO TREATMENT for Monday either :-(((((((((

Now it's THREE DAYS to add on. They can in certain circumstances do two treatments in one day, but there has to be a clear SIX HOURS in between. They are not going to do that to me, I am to have mine added on. So now it will be three more days. I knew finishing on Friday the 13th was a bad omen!!

Felt fed up going home, but what can I do. Not a lot really. Just take the tablets and hope for the best I suppose.

My leg is still red and hurts a lot. I suppose it'll take a while for the antibiotics to kick in. It hurts just sitting here. So very painful. I've got to keep walking on it though, don't want it to stop working now do we!

Feeling fed up. Sometimes it feels like it's been going on forever and will never stop. I know it will but it doesn't stop you feeling like it won't.

10 DECEMBER 2002

Strange thing, Surrey Ambulance turned up this morning, it was supposed to be this afternoon for Planning. I said I was going to planning and she said she wouldn't be able to take me home and would go on to the other patients and call the hospital. She suggested I did the same. This I did, when I eventually got through.

I was told that my appointment had been changed to the morning. On leaving on Friday it was decided that if I came in on Monday it would be morning otherwise stay as normal (afternoons). However this one had been changed. So I missed my transport, missed my clinic, missed seeing the doctor. Missed everything! Going tomorrow now, my birthday! Oh what fun I have!

MY BIRTHDAY!!!

Apart from Christmas, December is the month of my birthday. I'll be having radiotherapy on my birthday this year, no day off work and special trip somewhere. I'll have to have it after radiotherapy instead - if I'm awake of course!!!

Well I travelled to London with Graham and the other two patients. Apparently he was late as another driver had car problems. I went straight to Planning on arrival and waited, and waited. Was seen and taken to the Mould Room (again! I know this routine quite well now). The boot was made and I went back to the Waiting Room to see the Registrar.

She said that I would have to have another week of antibiotics as my leg was still very swollen and hard. Then to have a day off on Thursday (yippee in one way, boo in another as it means another day added on!). Then come back on Friday for readjustment of the boot, and scanning and measuring.

13 DECEMBER 2002

Friday the 13th - I knew it was a bad omen. I was SUPPOSED to have finished my treatment today. I'm feeling a bit fed up, as it means I'll have to add the SEVEN days on. I hope it won't have to start all over again that's for sure.

I have the boot back on in the Mould Room, and adjusted, it's quite nice not to have one so tight anymore that's for certain. In fact in places I think my leg has shrunk since Wednesday which is good news!!

I was taken to the Simulator and bolted down again. The machine was turned on and lasers lit up the ceiling. Not quite like Thorpe Park, but nice to see them again after so long without treatment. This is NOT treatment though, just the planning stage again.

Julie then called the various departments to check when treatment would start. IT STARTS MONDAY!!!! Yes, I'm back on track. This time it should finish on Christmas Eve. Who would've thought I'd be in a London Hospital on Christmas Eve this year. Certainly NOT me - I'd never even considered it all that time ago when the pains first started.

Still, at least by Christmas Eve it should be finished, I don't plan on eating Christmas Turkey there with a bit of luck! I'll be really tired then, I hope I don't fall asleep during Christmas dinner!!! ;-)))

Things are looking up again and I feel a lot happier knowing that. Fingers crossed it stays on track this time!

16 DECEMBER 2002

Well I must admit to being a tad nervous today, daft isn't it. I'm wondering if treatment will continue from today. I really hope so as I want to get this stuff finished with. It seems to have taken ages.

17 DECEMBER 2002

It worked, treatment went ahead yesterday. Although it was done a different way and the radigraphers came in half way through and adjusted the machine. It then went on it's merry way and continued.

I had to go to Planning first, then after waiting 3/4 hour, I was taken downstairs to Radiotherapy and sat in the waiting room and then after a little wait, was called in as normal. Very odd things happen sometimes that no one can explain! Bit like The X Files!

My clinic was cancelled due to sickness (that made me smile I can tell you!). Well in one way it did and in another it didn't. My leg is extremely sore, red and still rock solid which is worrying me. Maybe I need different antibiotics, who knows. I'd like to know when it is going to shrink back to normal (if you can call me normal!) and not be so sore all the time. It's painful even when the cats brush against it or my skirt.

Hopefully I will be able to attend the clinic on Monday and ask then.

20 DECEMBER 2002

Well, that's another week done and dusted! Only two more treatments to go.

We had a new guy in with our little gang of three (we've gone up together quite often and seem to get on alright, although two of us find one of the others annoying, having heard the same stories quite a few times now!).

We had a long wait for transport home today. I had a three hour wait almost! Got home at 7.45pm - very tiring. Now it's 1.17am and I'm wide awake. What a nightmare it is sometimes.

We may be going up on Christmas Eve in the morning instead of the afternoon which will be nice, although it means an early start - about 7am - 7.15am. We can all go early then with a bit of luck, fingers crossed, touch wood, and all that jazz!!

21 DECEMBER 2002

There's something odd going on with my leg. Lots of little bubbles are appearing on it - have to keep an eye on this. Well both eyes really!! ;-)))

It's the shortest day today. Less shopping hours for all you late shoppers!

22 DECEMBER 2002

Yuck - I've now got a HUGE blister on my leg, about the size of a clementine, full of fluid. I don't know whether to pop it or not, it might make it feel better. The pain is awful, it stings and my painkillers haven't touched the pain.

I think I'll wait until treatment tomorrow - maybe it will pop in the night.

23 DECEMBER 2002

Well it's still there. Really painful. I said to the radiographers that I had a problem and they checked it out.

"Yeuuchhh that looks painful" they said "let me get my colleagues to have a look". In the end they decided to drain it and I had to go to the treatment room. Loads of fluid later (I won't go into details - but it was gory!) and I went to the Linac machine ready for treatment hopefully.

My leg was covered in clingfilm and the sock was put on the foot and then into the boot. It was quite painful but at least it meant treatment could go ahead, so I stuck with it. Only two more days to go, I couldn't not could I!!

Still painful though but not as bad as it was earlier this morning!

CHRISTMAS EVE

Who can believe it is Christmas Eve already. It always seems so far away and then it's here.

I'm waiting for transport and then that's the treatment done.

I was invited to a Carol Service this afternoon, but as my treatment is still ongoing I might not make it which is a real shame.

All that remains now, is for me to wish everyone a HAPPY CHRISTMAS and an even better NEW YEAR for us all!!!

CHRISTMAS DAY

Christmas Day.....it always creeps up on us and then it's here. I hope my memory has not failed me and I've not forgotten anything or anyone! Fingers crossed.

We are having Christmas Dinner at home, then off to my cousins house, with my aunt and uncle this year. It was really nice all of us at the table, then pressies afterwards. Thank heaven for dishwashers now! It used to take ages!

I managed to stay awake all day and evening as well. Although once I got home I was extremely tired and went straight to bed!

I had some nice pressies, some would consider one of them sick, a pair of plastic legs....well I did ask for a new leg so one would look odd! I thought it was good ;-))))

BOXING DAY

We aren't going out today, just staying at home. Martin is coming around to see how much has been added to the Christmas Tree. It's a big tree (six foot and about a similar amount wide - well it seems like it!) and there is always something new on there.

He bought me a "cheer you up" pressie, it was a Ferarri bear in full racing gear, when you press his right paw he starts up the car by moving his little foot and his ears go back as he changes up - then, press his left paw and he changes down gears! Keep going down the gears and it eventually stalls! It's great - so funny!! So cute as well!

27 DECEMBER 2002

Another Christmas Day almost. Going to my Aunt and Uncles and my cousins are coming round, along with their kids. Quite a noisy day but enjoyable. I even managed a short walk to the river, nowhere near as far as the others, but it was good for me!

Henry (the youngest) was looking after me, and we played games and had some of the selection box chocolate. Good job this was after dinner!

I was feeling tired by the evening and my leg was playing up, but I continued on. We had crackers and party poppers and the kids put the party popper streamers on my head so I could remember what it was like to have hair! Nice huh!

My hair is growing now, slowly, but at least it's growing. I use my hats daily and got a nice one for a Christmas Pressie from Anne. I'd be lost without them in this cold weather we're having!

Felt quite rough later in the evening and very uncomfortable. Eventually my cousin took us home, and I was relieved to be honest. I didn't feel good at all. I had those pains in my side again, so I took a couple of painkillers and went straight to bed.

30 DECEMBER 2002

I felt a lot better over the weekend, although my leg is still SO painful. Nurse Amelia called this morning and I said I was concerned it was still weeping and not healing and the hardness and redness was still there. She said she would arrange for a District Nurse to come out.

At 11.30 (approx) Jane arrived! I didn't expect a visit that day, but there she was. She looked at my leg and said it was very red and could see it was sore. She said if it didn't calm down by Friday she would get the Doctor to have a look.

This sort of put my mind at rest, in that it was being seen by an expert, but then the bit about seeing the Doctor causes me some concern. Fingers crossed for Friday!

NEW YEARS EVE

New Years Eve. We aren't planning on going out anywhere. A stay at home one this time, along with most people I've spoken to. Not many are going out this year.

Lyn came round and we watched a DVD, (well almost, the DVD player didn't work!) and we had to get a video of it instead. By the end of the video I had those familiar pains in my side again. I didn't say anything at the time, but when she went I said I wasn't feeling too good.

Jane said to take some morphine if I was in pain, it wouldn't hurt me and I wouldn't become addicted to it, so I did. In the end I had four doses! It put me out all night, the pain was so bad again, I was crying in agony. I missed the New Year, and apparently there was loads of fireworks and bangers going off for around 1/2 hour and I didn't hear any of them!

Some New Year huh!
